An acclaimed author, a respected expert of the American frontier, has released a new publication titled Partners in the West, which delves into the careers of the famed lawman and Doc Holliday. Gardner states frustration with the oft-quoted line from a classic cowboy film: “When the tale becomes truth, print the legend.”

“Every writer uses it, they just overuse it,” the author comments cheerfully. “And it’s truly not true. I composed a narrative. I aim people to be immersed in the era, but I just get so exhausted of that line. The legend is legend. It doesn't become reality. People can recount the folklore but it can't make it reality.”

The Famous Shootout at the Corral

In Tombstone, Arizona, on a day in October 1881, Earp and Doc Holliday were took part in a confrontation that came to be known as the Gunfight at the OK Corral. Joined by Earp’s brothers, the two met the rustlers, members hunted for theft and rustling. In a brief moment, three gang members were killed and Doc was injured, as were Virgil and Morgan Earp.

“A lot of what we learn about it is provable,” Gardner noted of the true fight and its aftermath. “But I consistently go back to one of the best quotes, and it’s a very simple comment. An observer, who observed the fight, said: ‘I don’t know. All was confusion.’”

Even the people on the scene had varying stories. Evidence from the Spicer hearing is likewise confusing. Witnesses who were associates of the Cowboys were untruthful, and each story is somewhat distinct. It’s infrequent when a person concurs on any detail.

Different Natures of the Pair

He emphasizes the stark contrast between the two. Earp was ambitious, aiming to better himself and achieve positions like high office. Doc, hailing in Griffin, Georgia in the mid-19th century, was a dentist turned risk-taker. Different from Earp, he did not show signs of settling down.

“He just journeys from one gambling place to the next,” the author observes. “He doesn't actually evolve. And some of that’s his dependence to gambling. Part of that is his illness, managing that and treating himself, whether it’s with drink or later laudanum.”

Influence and Academic Importance

This volume demonstrates a fascinating facet of the frontier: the tension between order and lawlessness, and the attempts of officials to establish rule over newly forming societies. The degree of procedure that came after a gunfight – hearings, testimonies, orders for compensation – might astonish those familiar with Hollywood versions of the period.
