Substantial Online Outage Affects Dozens Websites and Apps
A widespread web failure has disrupted numerous websites and applications globally, with users experiencing problems getting online due to difficulties at the cloud computing platform.
The affected platforms encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-managed operations such as its main retail site and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.
Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of issues accessing the HMRC site on that morning. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring device owners used social media to state their doorbells were failing.
Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of issues on specific apps ran into the many thousands for each platform.
Officials confirmed that the issue started in the eastern region of the United States at the cloud division, a unit that provides essential internet backbone for a host of companies, who utilize capacity on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing platform.
Just after late night (PDT) in the US (8am BST), the company announced “increased error rates and delays” for AWS services in a region on the eastern US of the United States. The ripple effect appeared to affect platforms worldwide, with the problem monitoring service indicating problems with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.
Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on online failures, further indicated a rise in issues on the start of the week, including several cases found in the state of Virginia, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where AWS said the outage started.
