The esteemed football figure has stated that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, noting that it would be challenging to recreate the unique sense of purpose he felt as head of the Three Lions.

He indicated his aim to channel his attention toward supporting the next generation and addressing what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook currently found in the country.

Embracing New Avenues Beyond The Sport

In a recent radio interview, Southgate was prompted regarding speculation linking him with available jobs in the English football and other leagues.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Role Models

Ahead of the publication of his forthcoming publication, his leadership-focused book, he stated that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for young people, drawing on lessons from his period as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

He believes that his time managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he said. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Family Life and Guiding Young People

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Common Ground Above Discord

He stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often centers on conflict.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he stated. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s forthcoming book, the book Dear England, is scheduled to offer further insights on guidance and country pride drawn from his remarkable professional journey.
