Pacific Bluefin Tuna Commands Historic Sum of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital Auction
A bulky bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the new year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets throughout Japan and overseas.
"The first tuna signals fortune," remarked the entrepreneur, a familiar bidder at the traditional first sale.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is renowned for submitting substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.
Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "surprised at the winning bid," stating, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This most recent purchase tops his previous historic purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to surpass his personal record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be featured at its restaurants across Japan.
The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for customers at the bidder's sushi restaurants soon after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," remarked one happy customer.
