The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
