Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel ran across the track directly in front of him

The dangerous situation took place on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to change his broken nose section

Racer's Instant Response

Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"

"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two guys dashing across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be allowed to just run across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"

Official Investigation Underway

The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances

"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was advised that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the regulatory authority

"In the third rotation, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to access the circuit and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that zone"

"Our inquiry continues what occurred after that point"
