British Broadens Methanol Poisoning Advisory List with 11 Destinations
The UK authorities has added an additional eleven further nations to its travel advisory roster concerning the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated beverages.
This revised travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "an international surge in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Just last month, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, in response to several high-profile cases like the deadly demise of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or death within twelve to forty-eight hours.
What is Methanol and In what way is it Used?
Methanol is a toxic substance typically employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This chemical is not meant for drinking.
Although it is inherently formed during the creation of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.
But in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to notice.
Authorities' Guidance for Travellers
Authorities representative a senior official said that every traveler should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.
"While having drinks in foreign countries, choose reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," Falconer advised.
"If something appears suspicious, like a headache that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."
The full register of destinations noted as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
