The 2026 cars are expected to be lighter, more agile and sustainable compared to current models.

F1 has revealed the new language that will be used to describe the intricate details of its revolutionary 2026 regulations.

The championship is introducing what is arguably the largest technical shift in its long history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the compulsory introduction of 100% sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, necessitating major innovations in the cars' aerodynamics.

Throughout races, drivers will strategically manage battery power – sometimes even flying laps – to secure the best performance.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a mix of viewers, including long-time followers and newcomers, to understand which terms would aid comprehension of the central aspects of the new regulations.

The stated goal was to present a series of complex technical aspects of the competition as straightforward as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for specific components – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the moveable wings – have been phased out in favor of straightforward terms that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the technology.

Exploring the New Tech

Regulators explain that competitors will have more power to determine tactics regarding power usage, regeneration, and efficiency.

The 2026 rules feature a set of functions that will be visually displayed on broadcast screens to improve the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This takes over from the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a surge of additional ERS power deployable when a driver is close behind the vehicle in front to assist with an overtaking maneuver.
  • Power Mode: This is a driver-operated battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during attack or defence. It provides the pilot maximum power at the push of a button.

Both of these key functions will have to be used with calculation, as the total energy is restricted.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the car's wings move automatically – opening on the high-speed sections for reduced drag and increased velocity, and sealing in the corners for peak grip.
  • Battery Recharge: Cars can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during coasting at the straight's end or in certain corners where only partial power is applied.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be smaller and lighter relative to current models, with a wheelbase reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight lowered by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is projected to decrease by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they refine their designs.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The cars will employ adjustable aero systems – both wings will move on the straights to cut resistance and increase straightline speed and click back into place for peak handling.

Tyres will keep 18-inch wheel rims, but the rubber compounds will be narrower, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The new power units will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the internal combustion engine and the battery and motor, up from about 20% electrical this year.

The energy recovery system is simplified through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly unit that harvested power from the exhaust turbo.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on fully sustainable fuel, manufactured from organic sources or lab-created processes.
